We have reached an important milestone in the 2020 Census: More than half of the households in our nation have responded – that’s nearly 80 million responses!
However, recent news reports show that only 42% of Vermonters have filled out the 2020 census, the fifth-lowest reporting rate nationwide. Census data will guide local, state, and federal spending annually over the next ten years. These funding allocations affect over 300 programs, many that impact youth, seniors, Medicaid, health centers and homeless services. In 2010, for each person not counted in the census, Vermont lost out on $2,309 in federal funding, more than any other state. To respond to the census, visit 2020census.gov or call 844-330-2020.
Although the final versions of the census demographics did not include the option to identify our sexual orientation or gender identity, merely being counted will make a difference. As stated above for each person counted it will bring Federal funds into VT. It could mean as much as $4,000+ in Federal funding for each Vermonter counted. Although the current Federal administration is systematically trying to erase us, in VT we count. Our State government and its leaders actively listen to the LGBTQ+ communities, they solicit our input, hear our needs & concerns, and create policies/programs that include us. But to have a voice in how monies are used, we first need to get the money. We need to be counted!
It is not too late to respond to the 2020 Census while being safe and practicing social distancing at home; visit 2020census.gov or call 844-330-2020. Once you have responded, please encourage your family, friends, and loved ones to complete the census, too.
