Personal statement endorsed by the LGBTQIA Alliance of Vermont
As the current Statehouse Liaison for the LGBTQIA Alliance of Vermont, I feel compelled to respond to the recent hate-based incidents that have targeted 2 established LGBTQ organizations and a Jewish Synagogue.
Just over a year ago, I witnessed a public display of hatred such that I was not accustomed to seeing in Vermont. Burlington City Hall Park was the location a white supremacist organization had chosen to hold a public demonstration. Mayor Weinberger named it for the hate bias event it was, denounced the actions, and urged vigilance. Several hours later, Governor Scott, after receiving calls about the incident, issued a very similar statement.
This week, we have once again seen this very ugly part of hate show its face in Vermont; at a Jewish house of worship, at an organization that is dedicated to supporting LGBTQIA youth, and at an organization that has been the cornerstone of safety, support, and education for VT’s LGBTQIA communities. These hate-based acts of vandalism have been denounced by many organizations, communities of faith, social service agencies, and individuals; all stating their support for those targeted and reaffirming that this type of hate has no home in Vermont.
I too am in disbelief. What has changed since last year’s ugly display? We may have rallied, named the act for what it was “hate-filled”, denounced white supremacists/nationalists for bringing hate to our brave little state, but what have we really done? What have you done? What have I done?
I am reexamining my priorities and actions. I am making the pledge to redouble my efforts to educate and speak out where I see ignorance, prejudice, and hate. Is it an act of courage to do this? I don't think so. It is what is required of us as neighbors, family, friends, and what is needed to ensure Vermont remains an inclusive and accepting home to all who choose to live here.
I urge all to take a stand today. Pledge to speak, write, or just talk in opposition to these acts of hate and in support of being welcoming communities. You do not have to be part of the LGBTQIA or Jewish community to do this. This is a time to stand together. We are all Vermonters.
