Liaison Team - Week of 2nd February 2019
5th February: Bills currently under consideration and recommendations for possible action steps
To send an e-mail to an individual legislator: the configuration is, first letter of first name & then last name @leg.state.vt.us Such as for William Lippert: [email protected]
H. 3 Ethnic and Social Studies Standards: Bill would create a curriculum standards task force to create/review recommended curriculums that would include imbed representations of underrepresented communities in standard curriculums. Bill specifically includes LGBTQIA communities and would require community representation on task force. So, what was it like to be invisible in your public-school education? Was there any reference to Langston Hughes or Bayard Rustin as being gay? When did you first learn about Willa Cather or Barbara Jordan? And, do I even need to mention Christine Jorgensen or Renee Richards.
Currently under consideration: Senate Education
Philip Baruth/Chittenden
Debbie Ingram/Chittenden
Ruth Hardy/Addison
James McNeil/Rutland
Corey Parent/Franklin
Andrew Perchlik/Washington
Committee Admin: Jeannie Lowell: [email protected]
H.7 Second Degree Aggravated Domestic Assault: The bill would change protocol so that out-of-state convictions to qualify as a prior conviction in VT. This has long been an oversight in VT statutes. Again, personal stories have the greatest impact, specifically how the lack of inclusion places a victim/survivor at greater risk.
Currently under consideration: House Judiciary

Martin LaMonde/South Burlington

H.57 Preserving Right to Abortion: “(a) Every individual has the fundamental right to choose or refuse contraception or sterilization (b) Every individual who becomes pregnant has the fundamental right to choose to carry a pregnancy to term, give birth to a child, or to have an abortion. (c) A fertilized egg, embryo, or fetus shall not have independent rights under Vermont law.” There was significant testimony provided in committee in opposition to this bill. There is a public hearing scheduled for Wednesday 6th February starting at 4:30pm at the Statehouse. There is an indication there could be a strong opposition turnout at this hearing.

H.107: Paid Family Leave: Would provide up to 12 weeks per year of paid family leave. This differs from the proposal by Gov. Scott that would provide up to 6 weeks per year of paid family leave. Personal stories have the greatest impact. However, it is suggested letters include only one example per letter. This bill passed during the past session but was vetoed by Gov. Scott. The committee needs to hear there is support.

H.129 Universal Primary Care: This bill would create a publicly financed primary care program in VT. So, what is it like to have to “out” yourself with each new provider? Do you withhold important health care information? Would you receive better care if you had a consistent primary care provider? Under insured, would a publicly financed system allow you to access care when you need it?
Assigned to: House Health Care: They need to hear this has support and is needed.

S.23 Minimum Wage: Would increase minimum wage to $15/hour by 2024. Personal stories have the greatest impact. LGBTQ communities have traditionally been underpaid and under employed.
